The State Armoury Chamber

The State Armoury Chamber

The State Armoury Chamber is one of the oldest museums in Russia. The building of the Armoury Chamber was constructed in 1851 by the architect K.A.Ton especially to house the museum with its world famous collection of jewels. The first mention of the Armoury Chamber of the Moscow Kremlin was in 1508. The museum possesses a supremely rich collection of masterpieces of home and foreign, decorative and applied art of the period from the 4th to the beginning of the 20th century. The bulk of the collection is made up of objects of noble metals, armour and arms. Marvellous works by Russian goldsmiths and silversmiths of the 12th to the beginning of the 20th century: dippers, the priceless regalia of the tsar’s power and objects that belonged to the tsar court ceremonial from the 13th to 18th centuries are displayed in two rooms of the Armoury Chamber. The Armoury Chamber is an encyclopaedia of the Russian history; each exhibit is a genuine art monument.
