The State Tretyakov Gallery

It is a world known museum that stores thousands of works of art from ancient Russian icons to modern paintings. Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov,the founder of the gallery, started to collect the best works by Russian artists in 1856 and continued to do it for 40 years till his death. At the beginning of the 80s of the 19th century he ordered that a building for the art collection should be constructed in Lavrushinsky Lane. Only after the death of Pavel Mikhailovich the building of the gallery was enlarged to the sketches by the famous Russian artist Viktor Vasnetsov and redecorated in the style correspondent with its purpose. The current exposition comprises the ancient Russian icons of the 12th to 17th centuries as well as paintings, drawings & sculptures of the 18th to 19th centuries along with the Russian avant-garde school among the items.
